GitHub Copilot vs Claude Code: breadth or depth
Published
GitHub Copilot is the broad, inexpensive option: code completion in your editor, chat, a command-line agent and a cloud agent that opens pull requests, with models from several vendors, from US$10 a month (about CA$13.96). Claude Code is the deep one: a single agent you work alongside for hours, shaped by your instructions, skills and hooks, from US$20 (about CA$27.92). Teams that live on GitHub get the most from Copilot; people who hand an agent long, multi-step work get the most from Claude Code. Plenty use both.

What each costs in Canada
Copilot now meters model use in GitHub AI Credits: each plan carries a monthly allowance, and heavier models draw it down faster. Claude plans count usage in a five-hour window with a weekly cap, shared between chat and Claude Code.

One detail matters for this comparison: from Copilot Pro+ (US$39), GitHub lets you run third-party agents, Claude among them, from inside GitHub. That is a reasonable way to try Claude as an agent without a second subscription, though it runs on GitHub’s terms and credit allowance rather than a Claude plan.
Where they actually differ
We run Claude Code every day across more than a dozen projects and use GitHub for every repository, so we see both from the working side.
- Breadth against depth. Copilot is everywhere you already are: completions as you type, review comments on pull requests, an agent you assign an issue to. Claude Code does one thing — be the agent in the session — and goes further with it.
- Shaping the agent. Copilot reads repository instructions, including
AGENTS.mdand even aCLAUDE.md. Claude Code adds the parts we rely on most: hooks that run our own scripts before an action (so a rule like “never deploy without a green check” is enforced, not remembered), skills for repeated procedures, subagents for searches that would otherwise crowd the session, and plan mode to agree the approach before anything changes. - Models. Copilot lets you choose among Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, xAI and other models, priced in credits. Claude Code runs Claude only. If you want one subscription to try many models, that favours Copilot.
- Where the work lands. Copilot’s cloud agent is built around pull requests on GitHub. Claude Code works on your machine by default, where it can reach your local tools, data and scripts — and it opens pull requests too when you ask.
Who should pick which
- A team on GitHub that wants help everywhere for little money: Copilot, Business or Pro.
- One person or a small team handing an agent long, real tasks: Claude Code.
- Curious about Claude but already paying for Copilot: try it through Copilot Pro+ first; move to a Claude plan if you end up living in it.
- Both: Copilot for completions and pull-request review, Claude Code for the long work. They read the same
AGENTS.md.

Getting it set up
Most of the value is in the first afternoon of setup, whichever you choose. Our free guide to setting up Claude Code properly covers it, and the Canadian pricing page has every Claude plan in CAD. AI Setup is that afternoon done with you, on your own work.
