Claude Code vs Cursor: agent or editor

Published

Cursor is an editor with an agent built in; Claude Code is an agent that works from your terminal and plugs into the editor you already use. If you want to see every change in an editor as it happens, Cursor is the more natural fit. If you want Claude models doing long, multi-step work with the cost included in a flat plan, Claude Code is — under Cursor’s current plans, Claude models are billed separately at API list price, from US$30 a month (about CA$41.88) upward.

How Cursor prices Claude now

Cursor’s current plans are built around one weekly usage pool shared with Grok. The pool covers Cursor’s own models only. Plus, at US$8, cannot use Claude at all; from Premium up, Claude and other third-party models are available but paid separately at the vendor’s API rate, from prepaid credit. Many older comparisons still describe the previous pricing, so check the date on anything you read — including this page.

The practical upshot: if Claude is the model you want, a Claude plan includes it in a flat fee (US$20 for Pro), while in Cursor you pay the plan and the tokens. Heavy agent work burns tokens quickly, and pay-per-token is where costs surprise people — set a spending cap either way.

Where they actually differ

We run Claude Code every day across more than a dozen projects; Cursor we know from its documentation and from shorter use. The difference is mostly about where you sit while the work happens.

  • Editor first or agent first. In Cursor the editor is home, with the agent working beside your code. Claude Code starts from a conversation in the terminal and reports back in diffs; its VS Code and JetBrains extensions show those diffs inline. It also installs as an extension inside Cursor, so this is not either-or.
  • Long tasks. Where Claude Code earns its keep for us is work that runs for an hour across many files: plan mode to agree the approach first, subagents to search and review without crowding the main session, and a test command it must run before calling a task done.
  • Rules and memory. Both read project rules, and both support skills and MCP servers. Claude Code’s CLAUDE.md can import other files, and its hooks run your own scripts before or after any action — which is how we enforce rules like “never print a secret” in code rather than hoping the model remembers.
  • Model choice. Cursor offers many vendors’ models in one place. Claude Code runs Claude models only. If switching models per task matters to you, that is a real point for Cursor.

Who should pick which

  • You think in an editor and want help inline: Cursor.
  • You want Claude for long, multi-step work on a flat monthly price: Claude Code.
  • You want both: run Claude Code as the extension inside Cursor, or in a terminal pane beside it. Many people do.
  • You are cost-sensitive and happy with non-Claude models: Cursor Plus is the cheapest paid entry of the two.

Getting it set up

The tool you pick matters less than the afternoon you spend setting it up: instructions, a memory habit, a few skills, permissions and a way to check the work.
